Master of Arts in Biology

The M.A. degree in Biology is the only graduate degree in the School that leads to a professional clinical competence and that does not involve experimental laboratory research.

The M.A. degree program is closely adapted to earning the Certificate for Nurse Anesthesia at the School for Nurse Anesthesia in the Truman Medical Center in Kansas City.
This certificate gives experienced nurse anesthetists the designation "Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist" (CRNA).

The Masters degree is a requirement towards earning Board Certification.

• Admission into the program starts with acceptance of applicants by the School of Nurse Anesthesia.
• Extensive clinical experience, often for many years, in emergency rooms or intensive care facilities is a prerequisite to be considered for admission.
• A strong selection process, including interviews, reduces the number of potential applicants each year typically to between 10 and 20 candidates.
• Preference-ranked candidates are evaluated by the Graduate Programs Officer in SBS for basic science prerequisites and performance in science classes, for Grade Point Average and academic consistency.
• Admission into the Certificate program requires admission into the M.A. program.
• Typically, about a dozen new admissions are realized each year, a number limited by availability of clinical training positions.
• The MA Handbook lists the academic requirements for the M.A. degree. Coursework is chosen to provide the scientific basis for informed clinical performance.

• Program retention is extremely high and National Board Scores average currently about 98% with more than half of all Board Exam results being flawless.
• Hospitals vie for graduates from this program who demand currently in excess of $120,000 in starting salaries (2003).
