Graduate Programs - Prospective Students

Our graduate curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, independent research, and scientific discovery -essential tools to prepare for a scientific career in academia or industry. Students may pursue graduate degrees leading to the following degrees:

  • M.S. Cell & Molecular Biology
  • Ph.D. Cell Biology & Biophysics
  • Ph.D. Molecular Biology & Biochemistry

Students in the doctoral program are admitted to a primary discipline and a co-discipline. Students in the School of Biological Sciences must select either Cell Biology & Biophysics as their primary discipline, or Molecular Biology & Biophysics.

A unique aspect of the organization of academic units at UMKC is that all biological science disciplines are organized within one School, providing students with concentrated access to faculty in a wide-range of biological fields. We focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative research and education, which we believe provides the necessary training and learning exposure for modern biology.

Kansas City is a beautiful and affordable city for student living. The campus is located in the mid-town region, close to popular restaurants, shopping, and residential areas. Kansas City has excellent cultural activities, including the Kansas City Orchestra, the Missouri Repertoire, the Lyric Opera, and the historic 19th and Vine Jazz District. Professional sporting teams include the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Wizards.
