Lavoisier Society Constitution
Article 1 The name of this organization shall be Lavoisier Society.
Article 2 The purpose of Lavoisier Society is to encourage interaction between Biological Sciences stud ents, post-doctoral fellows, and research associates in order to establish a sense of community among the members of the School of Biological Sciences. This will be done by organized and scholastic events. In addition, the Society aims to strengthen the ties between the School of Biological Science s and the community at large.
Article 3 Membership in the Lavoisier Society is open to all duly enrolled UMKC students, upon request. Graduate students in the School of Biological Sciences, as well as post-doctoral fellows and research technicians currently conducting research in the School of Biological Sciences will be affiliated members, by default. Affiliated members are encouraged to attend all the meetings and functions of the Society. Voting members are affiliated members who pay their dues. The dues will be deposited in the Lavoisier Society's checking account. Only voting members may decide on the appropriation of money from the account. Monetary funds needed by the society will be requested from the Biological Sciences Student Council.
Article 4 Meetings will be held once a month. A quorum will consist of all the attending members, if atleast two officers are present. Absentee or proxy ballots will be provided to voting members for any major business. General meetings will be held the second Friday of every month at 12:00.
Article 5 Officers will consist of President, Vice-president, Secretary and Treasurer, who are to be voting members. The officers shall be elected annually by majority vote of those present.
Article 6 Committees shall be appointed by quorum vote as the need arises.
Article 7 A qualified faculty, staff, or community member must be selected by the membership as an advisor. His/her responsability will be to serve in an advisory capacity as needed.
Article 8 Amendments to the by-laws will require a simple majority vote of the voting members. Amendments to the constitution will require two thirds majority vote and must be tabled for one month. The by-laws should be revised and updated no less than every three years. It is further understood that if this organization desires at any time in the future to change in any way the provisions of this Constitution, that before such action is taken, the organization will submit for approval to the Student Government Association and the Student Life Office every detail of the desired changes to be made.
Article 9 Membership and activities are open to all enrolled students regardless of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, or Vietnam era Veteran's status.
Article 10 The books of account shall be kept up to date and open to inspection of the University auditor.

Officers and Responsibilities
- Supervise the activities of all committees.
- Assume the duties of the president in his/her absence.
- Maintain Web site.
- Keep the minutes of the monthly meetings.
- Mail all Society materials relevant to members.
- Keep track of all voting members.
- Keep accurate records of all funds.
- Draft and submit a yearly budget.
- Maintains a checking account in organization's name. Checks shall be signed by any of the officers.
Meetings shall be run according to simplified Robert's Rules of Order.
